Ash and Lime

Both of these people work with something that is still moving. Marguerite Oyelaran builds in unfired clay, which dries at its own rate and cracks where the floor is cold. Ivo Sarkin paints on plaster panels whose surface keeps absorbing for months after he stops.

The two bodies of work have not been shown together before and the pairing is not a claim about influence; they have never met. What they share is a willingness to hand part of the decision to the material, and a tolerance for the result being different in November from what it was in September.

The larger room holds Sarkin. Oyelaran is in the small room, built on site over nine days, and it will be taken apart rather than moved.
